A super qualitative visualization
of my last twenty hybrid years.

I define myself a hybrid designer, due to my interdisciplinary background that I tried to depict in the stream graph above.

Everything starts in 1997, my passion for computer programming brings me to study informatics at the high school and then, exhausted by the code and by the bug fixing,  I decided to give my education a radical shift and continue my studies in the design field. In 2005, after eight years of studies and works, I received a MA in Visual Communication at the Politecnico di Milano.

I like to code sometimes, I hate to code sometimes, it's part of my background and it's my interdisciplinary nature.

I mainly worked  for Erazero (2003 – 2010), a cross-media studio in Milan, partner of MTV Italy, where I developed many web and motion projects for clients such as Etro, Telecom Italia, Fida, La7 and of course MTV, initially as junior and then senior designer. Between 2007 and 2010 when I’ve been promoted to the Art Director role, I managed and directed the Erazero media division, for which I coordinated and developed the MTV European website “Play to stop” (now offline), the nationally broadcasted MTV billboards and the Etro Perfumes 2009 video presentation campaign.

Since 2006 my collaboration with Free University of Bozen Bolzano has started, initially  one day in a week, lecturing on “Generative design” and then “Interactive Media”, working as designer at Erazero as well.

In 2010 I decided to focus my career from the design production to the design research and experimentation, so  I moved my life from Milan to Bozen-Bolzano,  to work mainly as a lecturer at the Unibz and dedicate my time to design projects that I really care about.

Since 2013 I’ve been hired as researcher, this means that I teach my students “Interactive and Motion graphic” and I also research on “Visual Journalism”, an innovative way to inform a wider audience on complex phenomena in an engaging way, combining data visualization and visual storytelling. I still work as designer, and even my research is more design than academic oriented.

In fact, my last research project won the “Data Journalism Award 2015” as “Data visualization of the year” at the GEN Summit in Barcelona.

My last visual journalism project won the "Best data visualization of the year" prize at the Data journalism award 2015".

Part of my research is also through the work with students, a good way to exchange knowledge, culture and experiment new designs with them, so in 2012 I co-founded the research platform on visual journalism education, and Dramalab, the Unibz cross-faculty (Faculty of Design and Computer Science) physical computing lab.

Recently I decided to research more on the impact that social multimedia projects have on a local communities, so I started a PhD (Università di Trento) on “Social informatics” in order to improve my conceptual and academic skills. The first case study of my PhD investigation is my last research project People’s Republic of Bolzano (awarded with the Data Journalism Award 2015), an integrated multimedia storytelling project (A.Cairo), that combines a statistics-based investigation and a series of qualitative interviews, to invites citizens to discover who the members of the Chinese community living and working in the city are, what they think of Italy and of local culture and society,
